To make something for the house is always rewarding.  One can make enough to give to friends too, as this two wooden projects is so easy to make and always a gift.

Wooden Project 1.

The doors kept banging closed in the lightest of breezes and it made me jump everytime it does.  So, I had to make a plan.  Door stoppers.  I went to buy some, but to find the right one was a waste of fuel.  The ones I could get was made of rubber and the door went right over it!

I start to hunt for scrap wood and find some in my own back yard ... left overs from when the ceiling was fixed.  I marked out my lengths and find that if I cut it in a 10 cm length and then mark a line across from one corner to the other, that it forms a perfect wedge.

I took a hand saw and start to cut the blocks.  First I cut it in lengths of 10 cm and then across to get two wedges.  I made a few, one for every door in the house ... six in all.  After sanding them smooth, I painted each to match the color scheme of the room.  Soon friends and family wanted some too and it became gifts.

I decorated some with silk flower just for the fun, but one must keep in mind that you would most probably push it underneath the door, so it must not damage the flower or be in its way and that you would most probably use your foot to do so, so not to over decorate it with something fragile.

Other Uses:

- You can use it too when you need to level the fridge, the stove or any heavy object.

- You can use it to keep the door open, as one do not want to be locked out by accident out of your own house when the door locks on you from the inside!

Wooden Project 2.

Lost keys or dish cloths that is laying around, can be sometimes a bother, that is why I made some key holders and dish cloth holders, but soon found more uses for this colorful holders and they became gifts too.

Again I found some wooden planks, look them over to make sure that they are not damaged or skew and then decide what lengths I need for the key and dish cloth holders.  I marked the sizes out and then I cut them to size.  After that I sanded them down until they are smooth and dust free so that I can give them a few good lyers of paint. (Let them dry propperly before painting the next coat.)

Now I know most people makes the same holders but with screw in brass hooks.  I found that the brass hooks are making holes in the material and that was no good for me.  I found that office stationary - notice board pins, worked perfectly for me.  I marked about 2 cm off from the sides for the first and last pins, then I decide how many pins I will need in between and then devide it in equal spaces.  If the wood is a bit soft, I suggest that you take a srong wood glue and secure the pins with it when you press it in.  (In harder wood you might need to use a hammer, but work softly or cover the hammer head with a few layers of cloth so not to damage or break the pins heads.)

Now that that is done, we must consider how we are going to fix it to the wall or cupboard.  If it's for keys, I suggest that it must be strong, thus I will make two marks where I can drill two holes in for skrews.  I will choose screws that will go in masonite, those that normaly comes with plastic plugs to inser inteh wall, as this will need to be mark accordingly and drilled too and the plug size that must fit in there must be remembered.

If it's for dish or face cloths, one can stick double sided mirror tape at the back and press it to the wall or cupboard.  If the surface is not suitable for that, I suggests that you follow the steps I used for the key holder.  There is also a product that's "tough as nails" that you can use to secure the holder.  Give it some time to settle and then it's ready to use.

Remember to make sure your holder is level before you fix it to the wall, there is nothing so irritating as a skew fixture.

Other Uses:

- You can use it to hang a plastic bag close to where you are working or tidying up.

- You can use it to hang the unused soft toys to decorate a childs room.

- You can use it to keep all those little packets of plant food and growing sticks that always fall out in the drawers.

- You can use it to hang up necklaces and chains in your wardrobe's door to keep them neat and untangled.

Hope you have enjoyed this two projects!
