Basic requirements for drawing Drawing is one of the most inexpensive hobbies that there is. Drawing requires only a pencil, clean paper, cloth, eraser and sharpner. With these materials and your creative imagination you can draw what ever you want.
Pencils: Pencils are used to make an outline sketch of the subject. Variant grades of pensils are used for different purposes, such as 2B can be used for sketching, 3B is used for light shading, 4B, 5B are used for dark shading, HB or 1B can be used to create sharp and fine lines.
The H – 6H pencils are harder and leave a lighter line. These will also work well for lightly sketching in your composition. A 2H pencil with a light hand leaves a barely visible mark and this allows you to map out everything without having to go back and erase the construction lines. Drawing from light to dark avoid erasing and leave you with a messy drawing. Clean paper: Paper are used for drawing. For just playing around, any paper will do, but when you start to do serious sketching, it is the best to get the right kind of paper for the medium you are going to use. If you are planning to use graphite pencils only then a smooth, harder paper works the best. To begin with a pad of normal sketching paper will work until you are ready to move on to the nicer and more expensive fine art paper.
A soft cloth, like flennel is the best to work with for shading. Wrap it aroud your index finger and use it for broader shading and to smudge lines and curves.
Eraser: There are different kinds of erasers and it is important to get the right and a proper eraser for the medium you are going to use. The Pink eraser is the same kind that is found on a standard yellow pencil. They work well for erasing light marks, but be aware that as they age they will harden and leave pink smudges on the paper. The Plastic or White eraser is a good all purpose eraser. It removes light and dark marks can easily and cleanly. It is flexible and with a sharp knife or razor blade you can carve the eraser into a delicate point for erasing delicate light points and in sharp corners. But the erasers that serious drawing artist like to use is the clay erasers that you can shape and knead to your needs.
Sharpner: A good sharpner will make your task so much easier when you need to sharpen that pencil that can not make a neat sharp line anymore. Some people like to use a utility knive to sharpen their pencils to get a more chisseled point that gives them more drawing options.
